It was a freezing winter afternoon when I first saw her in the park.
The wind was sharp, and the world felt completely empty and gray.
A small girl, no older than eight, sat on a bench shaking in a thin coat.
In her arms, she was holding a tiny, trembling puppy.
I asked if she was okay, and she nodded while holding him tighter.
She said she found him near a dumpster, crying in the cold.
Her family couldn’t afford food, let alone a dog.
But she couldn’t leave him there alone.
The puppy was barely alive, shivering from fear and cold.
I told her I could take him home and keep him safe.
She hesitated, then made one request before letting go.
She said she only wanted to visit sometimes so he wouldn’t forget her.
I promised her she could come anytime she wanted.
That moment changed all of our lives without us knowing it yet.
I thought I was just helping a lost puppy that day.
But I had no idea I was stepping into a story that would break my heart three years later…
