My Mother Sold the House Grandma Left Me

The first time my mother told me she had sold the house my grandmother left me, I laughed. I was standing in my document restoration studio, still wearing white cotton gloves, when she calmly explained that my brother Brandon needed the money more than I needed “an old building.” She had accepted $188,000 for the pale-blue Savannah house worth far more, using the proceeds to cover Brandon’s failed business debts and luxury vacation.
I stopped laughing when I realized she had no idea what Grandma had actually planned.

Grandma Evelyn had left the house to me in a living trust, naming me sole beneficiary. My mother only had temporary permission for basic maintenance. When I drove to my parents’ house, I found the forged power of attorney — dated two weeks after Grandma’s death. As someone who restores historic documents for a living, I immediately recognized the signature was fake.
