Every August since her divorce, Raylene Combs filled a mason jar with overtime pay, church cleaning money, and exhausting summer jobs so her children would always begin school with new clothes, even while her ex-husband’s new wife, Shauna, spread cruel rumors across their small Illinois town that Raylene neglected her own kids and left others to care for them.
