Ex’s Hidden Gift

At sixty-five, Sarah Carter finally decided to use the bank card her ex-husband Richard had given her after their thirty-seven-year marriage ended.

She had kept it untouched in a small box for years, determined to remain independent after the quiet divorce. Sarah had supported herself with cleaning jobs, living simply in a small room above a garage while refusing to burden her children, Emily and Daniel. The card represented a painful past she preferred not to revisit. But after struggling with her health and daily tasks, pride gave way to practicality. She walked into the bank expecting only a modest balance to help with immediate needs.

The teller checked the account and called the manager, who brought a sealed envelope with Richard’s familiar handwriting. It could only be released with the original card. Inside was a heartfelt letter revealing the truth Sarah never expected.
