The Seat Beside Me Came With a Warning Before Takeoff 2

Harriet came up the aisle before I found an answer. Mom, she said, take my seat. I will sit here so this lady does not feel uncomfortable. We switched. I settled behind them with the baby still latched and watched my daughter open her tablet.

Harriet turned the screen toward the woman. On it was the video she had recorded from the row behind: the warning before takeoff, the voice that carried, the demand that a hungry infant be hidden in a toilet. Beneath the clip she had pulled up the airline page that allows nursing at the seat, and a draft note to the crew already addressed. You can let him finish, Harriet said, or I can send this. The woman’s face changed. She made a small sound, stood, and hurried toward the galley. Passengers turned. A flight attendant met her there and moved her without a speech.

No one asked me to apologize again. I finished feeding my son and buttoned my shirt with hands that finally stopped shaking. Harriet came back and held the empty bottle bag as if it were ordinary work. We landed. My mother met us at the curb and took the baby so I could stand up straight. In her guest room that night I sat with the cover folded on the dresser and understood what Harriet had protected. I had been trying to make myself small enough that no one would notice I was still a body in the world. A child should eat. A widow should occupy her seat. Being seen is not an indecency. Freedom is remaining visible when grief and hunger both refuse to wait. Self-worth does not move to the bathroom to keep a stranger comfortable.
