I Woke to Three Alerts and an Empty Ceramic Dish

I woke at seven to three bank alerts and a number that did not belong to morning. Forty-two thousand dollars, every dollar I had put toward a first house, was gone. I crossed to the closet, second shelf, the small ceramic dish where I kept the card. Empty. My name is Serena. I am thirty-two. I had believed the hard part would be qualifying for a mortgage. The hard part was learning that my family treated my savings as a shared drawer. Bianca at the bank blocked the card and pulled ATM footage. I knew the coat before I knew the face. My mother. I drove to their kitchen. You blocked the card, she said, as if that were the offense. She had needed another fifteen thousand. Damon needed it.

Damon was my younger brother. Unpaid bills, debts, and emergencies had always ended with the same instruction: call Serena. I had told her no the week before. That no had not counted. Dad looked up and told me to unblock the card and watch my tone. The money was for my house, I said. He said my brother was in trouble. When I named the police, the room cooled and Mom smiled.
