Five Months Of Sunday Dinners Before A Ring Slipped Into A Cushion And Answered A Question I Never Asked 2

I was twisting the ring on my finger when it slipped into the gap beside the armrest, and when I pushed my hand down after it I found a metal box in a grocery bag instead.

Inside were nine driving licences. Different names, different states, the same face. Underneath them, photographs of women, and in three of them the woman was me, taken from across a street, months before we ever matched.

He had chosen me before Tinder. The sleeve covered a tattoo, a prison identification from a sentence served under a name that was not Callum, and he had kept it hidden because any one of those women might have recognised it.

Two officers came within eleven minutes and he did not resist. His mother did not seem surprised, which is the part that still sits with me.

Six women testified. I was the seventh. He is serving nineteen years.

Two of them are close friends of mine now. We meet in September, all three of us, in a restaurant one of them owns, and we talk about work and children and almost never about him.

The ring turned up in the evidence photographs, still down in that cushion. I never asked for it back.

I spent five months being carefully studied by someone who wanted me not to look closely at him. What saved me was one accident and one small refusal to leave a question alone. I have learned that noticing things is not paranoia. It is the beginning of belonging to yourself.
