A Sheet Cake With His Name On It And A Banner Sagging Over The Fireplace Before I Even Took My Coat Off

Because I had reported it eleven days earlier, from six thousand miles away, the morning a deed alert reached my work address. The Bureau had the notary, the forged instrument, and the recording receipt before the closing funds had even cleared escrow. My work is federal, and the room full of relatives who thought I filed forms all day found that out at the same time as everybody else.

The Whitcombs were innocent. The sale was voided and their money returned in full, and I met them for coffee that spring and apologised to them, which felt like the right thing to do even though none of it was mine to apologise for. They bought a place two streets over. Their daughter learned to ride a bike on my pavement.

Colby served nineteen months. My parents wrote to me twice during that time, both letters asking me to intervene, and neither asking how I was. I answered the second one, briefly, and honestly.

I sold the house myself the following year and bought something with a garden. I go back for nothing.

I spent thirty years being the one who was overwhelmed while he was decisive. Nobody in that room ever checked.
