The video was fourteen minutes long and Everett had filmed it from inside his truck at the dock, the phone propped against the windscreen. Roland stood outside the driver’s window. The audio is clear. My husband tells his brother that he has been to the bank, that he knows about the second mortgage, that he knows Roland forged his signature on it in the spring, and that he is filing a report on Monday morning after the boys are home. Roland’s face changes about six minutes in. He asks Everett to think about the family. Everett says he has thought about nothing else and that is why he brought his sons, so that there would be a reason for this conversation to stay civil.
The phone was not lost. Everett had hidden it in a tackle box under the spare rods, and the clip was never sent to anybody, because he was going to hand it to the sheriff in person and he never got the chance.
