Thirteen Winters Before Six In The Morning So My Daughter Would Never Have To Learn To Start A Blower

I opened the door because it was five in the morning and the roads were closing and he is still the father of my grandchildren. He stood on my unshoveled steps with snow on his shoulders and he did not come in. He said the director had cancelled, the roads were shut, the dinner was off, and then he said the thing he had driven through a foot of snow to say, which was that Coralie did not know he had come. He had found out about Wendell’s quote. He had worked out, standing at the feed store counter himself the day before, what the number meant and how many years it stretched back, and he had done the multiplication I had done by the stove.

He said he was sorry. Not the cheap kind. He stood in the cold and named it plainly, that they had let a seventy-four-year-old woman with two broken ribs stand at their door until her glasses froze, and that he had heard my knock and said nothing, and that it was the worst thing he had ever done. I let him say all of it. Then I told him to go home before the road took his truck, and he did.

Coralie did not come for eleven days. When she did, she came alone, and she cried at the kitchen table that had felt too big, and she did not ask me to unsay anything at Barrett’s office, because she did not yet know I had been there.
