He sat down next to her and asked, very gently, if he could see it again. She let him hold her wrist under the lamp for a long time.

I apologised for the worst sentence I have ever said to my child. She told me it was okay, that she knew I was drowning. A fifteen-year-old, forgiving me for that, in that week. I will spend a long time earning it.

The funeral bill got paid. Warren picked up weekend shifts and I sold my mother’s car, and we handled it the way she would have, quietly, without a fuss.

Nadia is nineteen now. The words have faded a little, the way handwriting does. She says she likes that. It means it is aging with her.

We kept the porch light on. We keep it on still, every night, on purpose.

For three days I looked at my daughter and saw someone selfish, someone who could not read the room in the middle of our grief. She had read it better than any of us. She was the only one who found a way to hold on. I had been so busy running numbers that I nearly missed the fact that the quietest person in the house was the one grieving most completely, and loving hardest, right in front of me the whole time.
