Forty One Years Of Learning To Tell A Messy House From A House That Is Simply Wrong 2

I did not call in a removal. I called my son. He flew home the next day. We sat in that curated living room and he told me the truth, all of it, badly, and I listened the way I never got to listen in four decades of other people’s kitchens, because this time the frightened person across the table was mine.

Elena is five now. She calls me Pop. She comes on Saturdays and we sand furniture together and she is very bad at it and I let her ruin things on purpose.

Desmond and I are slow. Marisol and I are slower, and I have stopped waiting for her to be someone she is not. She was afraid of exactly the man I was trained to be, and she was not entirely wrong to be.

I spent a whole drive outrunning hope, certain I knew what that door would hold. What it held was a child who had simply been hidden from love, mine, out of a fear that I would look at her family and find it wanting. I never got the chance to prove I wouldn’t have. So I am proving it now, one Saturday at a time. Being seen without being judged is the rarest thing I know, and it turns out I had to give it to my own son before he could let me near the granddaughter he thought I would take from him.
