My mother settled rather than let every letter be read into a record, because the letters were not only evidence of the estate. They were evidence of who she had always been, and she could not bear the whole county reading them.

He wrote that she was still my mother and that the truth, on paper, was punishment enough for a woman who had spent her life rewriting it. So I took the cabin, the restitution, and the record, and I let the rest go.

Bexley and I do not speak. She lost the brand when the funding stopped and the sponsors read the filings. My mother sends cards I keep, unopened, in a box labeled with the year.

I live at the cabin part of every month now. I replanted the wildflowers Bexley’s plastic planters had smothered. They came back the following spring, which my grandfather would have said was the whole point of native things.
