The engraving was a name and a date. The name was Warrick Holloway, and the date was the day my son was born. I did not understand it standing in my kitchen, and it took the rest of that strange week to understand it at all. The homeless man against the wall was not a stranger who had wandered into our lives. His name was Warrick. Eleven years earlier, on the day Silas was born, he had been a session guitarist and a very wealthy one, and he had lost all of it, slowly, to an illness and a series of decisions he told Silas about on that sidewalk in the twenty minutes my son sat and listened.

The gold bar was not a fortune he happened to have. It was the last thing he owned, the one thing he had carried through years of shelters and doorways because he could not bring himself to sell it, and he had it engraved decades ago with his own name and the date he swore he would turn his life around, which happened, by a coincidence I still cannot fit into words, to be the day my son came into the world.

He gave it to Silas because my son handed him an envelope of guitar money without being asked, and because a boy who talks to you for twenty minutes and sees a person instead of a problem is rarer than gold.
