He wrote in a second note, tucked under the plastic, that he had watched people walk past him for eleven years and that Silas was the first child who had sat down beside him on the pavement.

We found Warrick. Silas insisted, and I was not going to say no. He had not vanished. He was still in the neighborhood, and my son wanted to give the gold bar back, and Warrick would not take it. So we did the only thing that felt right. We sold it, together, all three of us, and it was worth far more than any of us guessed, and we used part of it to help Warrick into a small apartment and a program, and the rest went into an account with my son’s name on it that Warrick himself asked us to open.

Silas got his guitar. Warrick taught him. That is the part I still cannot quite believe. A man who lost everything sat in my living room on Tuesday afternoons and taught my eleven-year-old the instrument he had once played for a living.

Warrick has been housed for two years now. He has his dog, a small place, and a standing seat at our Sunday table.
