Bennett hired a lawyer to contest it. The lawyer read the trust documents, the medical records showing Adelaide’s clear competence, and the visitor logs from Warren’s care facility, and advised him there was no case. A woman who signs a sound trust in front of witnesses cannot be overruled by a son who visited ninety minutes in six months.

He has not spoken to her since. That was three years ago. She sends him a card each Christmas, addressed in her own hand, and she does not know if he opens them.

Adelaide is eighty now. She volunteers two mornings a week at the library that will one day be part of her estate. The scholarship gave its first four awards last spring, and she read every application herself, and she wept over the ones written by children whose parents change sheets for a living.

She kept Warren’s World’s Best Dad mug. She drinks her coffee from it every morning, and she has decided that is not sad, but true, because he was, to a boy who never learned to notice.
