I Came Home to a Hundred Roses for My Wife and Feared the Worst Until I Read the Note 2

Room 14 had noticed she was leaving. They pooled lunch money and birthday coins. Marcus’s mother sold them flowers wholesale. Shy Oliver asked his grandmother for five dollars. Lily, for whom every letter was hard-won, wrote the note because, Caleb said, her handwriting looked the most like love.

I apologized for the look I gave her on the steps. She should have told me sooner; I should have asked. We could afford a summer. We could not afford her getting sicker. Principal Hartman had been holding an unsent reply. A district leave policy neither of them had really seen offered twelve weeks with her job held. Jane took the leave instead of walking off a financial cliff. Letters arrived. Priya wrote three pages. Marcus hoped she ate good food. Oliver said the work mattered. Lily practiced all summer and wrote that they would wait. Jane slept late, saw her sister in Portland, and wrote essays about the classroom that a small journal accepted in August.

She went back in the last week of August because the children needed continuity and because remembering she could write made the job feel like less than everything she had. Priya corrected her spelling. Lily ran to her desk with a notebook of practiced letters. On the first Friday of September Jane handed me a crayon drawing of a smiling woman in a window of light. At the bottom, in wide clear letters: You came back. Good. The roses were long gone. Their petals had gone into the garden, and the tomatoes that summer were extraordinary. We were home most evenings. We talked. The house looked almost the same, which is how we knew something had actually changed.
