Eighteen Missed Calls Sent Me Flying to My Daughter Then One More Text Stopped Me 2

I hugged her harder than she expected, told her to lock the door, and walked back to the truck with heat in my face. Halfway down the walk my phone buzzed again. Same thread. Same name. I froze on the sidewalk and opened it.

I used Mom’s phone. Don’t tell her I wrote that. Please come to the garage side door. He gets loud when people knock in front.

I went around the house without turning on a flashlight. The side door was unlocked. On the concrete floor sat a sleeping bag, a backpack, and my twelve-year-old granddaughter, Maya, in a hoodie two sizes too big. She had Claire’s old phone in both hands. She whispered that Ryan had been screaming at her mother for weeks after the lights went out. Tonight he had thrown a glass. Claire had told Maya to stay in her room and pretend she was sleeping. Maya had taken the spare phone from the junk drawer, called until I woke, then deleted the thread so her mother would not see it. She was not trying to wreck the engagement. She was trying to get an adult who still answered.

I sat on the cold floor with her until she stopped shaking. Then I called Claire from my own phone and asked her to come outside alone. She did. When she saw Maya, the story she had been holding together came apart in the dark. Ryan stayed inside. I did not go back through the front door. I took my daughter and my granddaughter to my house for the rest of the night. In the morning Claire filed a report and changed the locks. Ryan packed while a neighbor waited on the porch. Maya slept in the guest room with the hall light on. I kept both phones on the nightstand and did not silence a single call. Some messages look like panic until you read the next line. That line was a child asking to be believed.
