Hosting my mother-in-law’s birthday dinner at our home should have felt like a warm family gathering. Instead it became the moment everything cracked. Brian and I had spent years working toward a simple life by the coast. We finally bought a cozy white cottage three blocks from the ocean and poured ourselves into making it home.
His parents, Janet and Carl, and his sister Amy began visiting more often and staying longer. Comments turned into assumptions. The guest room became “hers.” Holidays were automatically held at our place. Brian kept promising to draw a line and never quite did. Then came Janet’s birthday. She wanted “just close family.” Eleven people arrived. I cooked for two days. Lily made a glittery banner. I finally sat down for a single bite of salad.
Carl stood up with his wine glass. “To my wonderful wife, who booked us a two-week vacation in this beautiful beach house!” People clapped awkwardly. I asked where. His expression darkened. “Here. This house!” When I said it was our house and they could not just stay for two weeks, silence fell. Then Carl exploded.
