Four Days After A C-Section, A Copied Key Scraping My Lock, And A Bedroom Already Promised To Somebody Else 2

The Facebook post was the part I was told to leave alone, and I did, right up until the case closed. Then I posted once. Not a rant. The deputy’s report, the demand letter, and one line from my grandmother’s email, the one where she wrote that she had watched my mother favor one daughter her whole life and would not let it happen with what she left behind.

I did not add commentary. The relatives who had called me cruel went quiet. A few called back to apologize.

My mother has not seen Wren. That is not a punishment I enjoy. It is a boundary I stopped apologizing for. She may see her grandchild when she can acknowledge, out loud, what she tried to do, and she has not managed it in three years.

Corinne and I do not speak. Grant sent one message, months later, saying he had not known about the emails, and I believe him, and that is where it ended.

Wren is three now. She learned to walk in the front room they wanted for their boys. The nursery I stood guarding with a fresh incision is her big-girl room now, painted the color she pointed at.

They arrived with a truck and a copied key, certain that my exhaustion and my stitches and a lifetime of being called difficult would make me too weak to hold my own door. They mistook a healing woman for a defeated one. My grandmother saw the whole shape of it before she died and refused to let them rewrite my inheritance out from under me. I finished what she started. I stopped being the daughter who could be moved out of the way the moment I understood I was the only one in that family my grandmother trusted to hold the line, and I have held it, four days postpartum and every day since.
