I Secretly Bought A New House And Found My Brother’s Family Moving Into It Uninvited 2

Danielle had listed my carriage house online two weeks earlier, using photos from my real estate listing, and had already collected deposits from four different guests. The other three bookings were for the following weekend. She planned to cover their new life with my property. The couple on my porch had paid nine hundred dollars. I apologized, explained the situation, and showed them the deed. They called the platform right there on my steps.

Janelle Ortiz, my attorney, arrived within the hour. She calmly informed Danielle that renting out property she didn’t own was fraud, and that every guest deserved a full refund by Monday. Danielle’s face went from red to white. Her relatives quietly started carrying boxes back to the truck. Mitchell turned to his wife in disbelief. He hadn’t known about the listing either. For the first time in his life, my brother looked at me and said, “I’m sorry, Laurel.”

The movers loaded everything back into the truck by the next evening. Danielle refunded all four guests after the platform banned her account. My parents paid the deposit on a three-bedroom rental across town, using their own savings for once. Mom cried in my driveway and finally admitted she had let things go too far because she was afraid of Danielle’s temper. Mitchell’s kids hugged me before they left, and I promised they could visit anytime, as guests.

Dad apologized too, eventually. He brought a housewarming plant. It’s thriving. Mitchell took a second job and started paying his own way. A month later, I finally had my first peaceful morning in that house. I sat on the porch with coffee, watching the sun come up over Church Hill, my old winter coat folded beside me. Then I hung one framed photo on my freshly painted wall. Mine.
