They Called Me A Charity Case At The Lake House Until One Lawyer Finally Spoke 2

In the dining room, Marjorie sat stiffly at the head of the table, with Trevor and Brooke standing beside her. Mr. Hale held the deed folder open with unsteady hands. “Marjorie, the owner of record is the Gerald Thornton Family Trust,” he said. “Its sole trustee is Sofia Thornton.” Then he looked up at me and froze. “Wait,” he said quietly. “She’s the owner?” The guests who had laughed earlier stared into their wine glasses.

Leonard laid out the rest. Marjorie had borrowed against the lake house three times to cover Trevor’s failing company and her own spending, forging Gerald’s initials on two of the loan papers. The guarantee Trevor tried to hand me was meant to cover the third loan before the bank noticed. Gerald had amended the trust nine days before he died, so that I alone controlled everything, and anyone trying to pull me into debt would lose all rights to it.

Marjorie said Gerald had been fooled and that I was never family, until Leonard played a short recording from the cedar box. It was Gerald’s voice. “Sofia is my daughter in every way that matters,” he said, “and the only one of you who never asked me for anything.” The guests began to leave. Brooke cried and said she had not known about the forged papers. Trevor admitted the bank was weeks from calling his loan, and that he had never meant to protect me.

I did not evict anyone that night. I told Marjorie she could stay ninety days if she cooperated with the bank and repaid the forged loans from her own accounts. Trevor’s company was sold, and the debts were cleared. Brooke wrote me a letter that I kept. I used part of the estate to start a scholarship for adopted children at Gerald’s old school. In spring, I hung his fishing hat by the lake house door, and I finally felt at home.
