I Cleaned Her Farmhouse For Twenty Three Years And Then They Slammed The Door Shut 2

The line Winifred tapped was a recorded easement. Josephine had given me the tenant house, the grove, and forty acres, and she had also reserved the lane as my permanent right of way. That meant the sons could not sell the farm to any developer without my signature, because the only road in ran across my land. Warren’s mouth opened and closed. Dalton muttered that nobody could do that to them. Winifred said Josephine had done it with a lawyer, two witnesses, and a notary eleven years ago.

Then Winifred slid an envelope across the table. It had my name on the front in Josephine’s shaky hand. Inside was a letter and a cashier’s check for forty thousand dollars. The letter said she had watched her boys grow up, and she knew exactly what each of them would do the day she died. She wrote that I had earned that house a hundred times over by sitting with her on Fridays when nobody else would. I cried so hard Winifred had to bring me a chair.

Warren found his voice and offered me a hundred thousand for the land, cash. I looked at him and said I would think on it. He tried to apologize for the check and the door, but I told him Josephine had already said everything that needed saying. Orville quietly asked whether he could still visit the grove, where he had played as a boy. I said he could, if he knocked first. Nobody laughed. Dalton stared at his shoes. The brothers left without another word.

That evening I drove to Loretta’s house and showed her the deed. She cried and begged me to forgive her for saying no. I moved into the tenant house in November, with the porch swing right where Mama left it. Warren sent a real apology by Christmas, and I did not sell. These days I drink coffee on that porch every Friday, with a biscuit set out for an empty chair.
