I always believed my neighbor Harold hated me for no reason.
He complained about my garden, my fence, and even the way I walked outside.
Every morning I tried to enjoy my coffee and ignore his behavior.
My roses were my pride and the heart of my small flower business.
One morning I woke up and saw my entire rose bed destroyed by dumped soil.
Something inside me finally snapped because it felt intentional and cruel.
I marched toward his house ready to confront him once and for all.
But I stopped when I saw strange cars parked everywhere outside his home.
A neighbor quietly told me Harold had died of a heart attack overnight.
The anger I felt turned instantly into confusion and shock.
The next day I was called to a lawyer’s office for his will.
I did not understand why someone who hated me would leave me anything.
Inside the office, I sat across from the attorney and a silent elderly woman.
The lawyer announced that Harold had left me his entire house and land.
My mind went blank as I tried to process what I was hearing.
Then he added there was one strict condition attached to everything.
I had to provide a permanent home for the elderly woman sitting beside me.
If I refused, I would lose the inheritance completely.
The woman looked at me with a soft smile that made me uneasy.
I agreed without fully understanding what I was stepping into.
But when I moved into Harold’s house, I found locked boxes hidden in the garage.
Inside them were photographs that made my hands start shaking uncontrollably.
Because one of the faces in those photos looked exactly like me.
