Vacations are supposed to be about trust.
My wife Mara and I booked a beautiful Airbnb deep in the countryside. The listing looked perfect—amazing reviews, a cozy cottage, and complete privacy.
The first night felt normal.
Until Mara pointed at a blinking red light above the bed.
At first, I thought it was just a smoke detector.
But when I climbed up and removed the cover, my stomach dropped.
Behind the plastic casing was a tiny lens.
A camera.
Without saying another word, I told Mara:
“Pack your stuff. Now.”
We threw everything into our bags and rushed outside.
As we drove away, I glanced back at the house.
For a split second, I thought I saw someone moving inside.
Hours later, sitting in a diner, I reported the hidden camera and left a review warning other guests.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from the host.
It said:
“You fool. That wasn’t a camera. It was a transmitter for our private security system. Now you’ve broken it…”
My heart stopped.
Because the message ended with seven words I’ll never forget:
“…and they’ll come looking for it.”
