I Buried My Husband and Booked a One-Year Cruise Before My Son Tried to Make Me His Maid 2

The first notice arrived while they were on vacation. When they returned, a woman from the court informed them the apartment was not theirs. They could stay if they paid rent. Austin called me in a panic. I did not answer. Chloe sent long messages about my selfishness. I forwarded them to Iris.
They made every payment. Austin took a second job. Chloe went back to work. Maya, their daughter, started doing her own homework. The animals were rehomed responsibly. I was on a ship in the Caribbean when Austin finally read his father’s letter and my note.

When I returned a year later, Austin met me at the port. He took the blue suitcase from my hand. We are still working on things. Chloe and I are polite. Maya sleeps in the back bedroom every other weekend and we make Ernest’s arroz con pollo together.
Sometimes the kindest thing a mother can do is stop being useful. I buried my husband, emptied three cages, and left a note. It cost me a year with my son. It bought me the rest of him. Love sometimes means refusing to carry what was never yours to carry.
