Mark forwarded the message to me. When I confronted her she claimed she was only trying to protect me. I understood she was trying to keep me available every weekend.

I resigned from my warehouse job and began the consulting work in earnest. At a family barbecue I announced that I would no longer be available for lawns, oil changes, or honey-do lists taped to garage doors. Jim called me ungrateful. Jim never offered a full apology, but the free labor ended. They hired a lawn service and took their cars to a real mechanic. My business grew quickly; by the end of the first year I had doubled my old salary and controlled my own schedule. At Thanksgiving six months later Jim quietly acknowledged that the business was doing well and shook my hand. We stood on equal ground for the first time.
