For Eight Years He Left The House At The Same Hour, And I Never Once Asked Where The Road Went.

The woman said eight years. She asked if I still thought he was a construction worker.
When I stepped out, Marcus did not run. He said the fall from the scaffolding had ended that work three years ago, and he had never told me because I had married a man who could provide. So he had gone back to a beginning instead. The building was an adult learning center. The woman, Priya, had taught him to read past a fourth grade level, and now he taught the evening class himself, the one for men too proud to sit in a room in daylight.
The lunches went to Walter, who slept at that corner. The notes stayed in his pocket because they were the first sentences Marcus ever taught himself to read.

I did not shout. I sat on a low wall outside that building and understood that my husband had been carrying his shame alone so it would not touch us.
That evening we told Elliot together. He asked his father to read him something. Marcus picked a short book and got through it, slowly, and none of us mentioned the slowness.
He wears the suit on Thursdays now. I still write the notes, and he still keeps them.
We spend so long hiding the parts we think disqualify us from love, when being fully seen is the only place love has ever been able to live.
