We Offered Them Good News and They Offered Us Advice 2

We paid tuition, weddings, down payments, emergency bills, and loans that became gifts. We never asked for repayment. Gerald pressed my hand under the table and smiled calmly. Maybe you are both right, he said. We need to make better arrangements. They left looking pleased, as if they had corrected us.

Gerald waited until the car was gone, then opened his laptop in the study. He called our attorney, our adviser, the clinic we knew, and one more number that surprised me. A week later Brandon shouted into the phone. What did Dad do. All of it was supposed to come to us. Gerald slid a folder over and said to read the last page. The house, savings, and rental now sat in a living trust for our care and our years. After we were gone, the remainder would go to the clinic and a small housing fund. They would receive photographs and a letter.

Danielle came two days later with folded arms and called it punishment. I told her we were not a balance waiting to be collected. They called less after that. We took the trip. The room was quiet. The pool was small. I slept without listening for the next test result. Gerald read by the window. We would not spend our last good days guarding someone else’s future. A person is not an inheritance that happens to still be alive. Freedom is using your own years first. Self-worth does not require your children to see you before you see yourself.
