A Month After the Funeral I Opened the Bottom Drawer 2

Cordelia was my sister. The river story the family buried her with had been her door out of a marriage that would have killed her. Douglas found her three years later by accident, working under another name. She asked him not to resurrect her and not to lay that ghost in my lap. He paid the rent so she could stay small and alive. He left no romance in it. Only a promise he kept alone.

She showed me a letter in his hand, dated the month the cancer started. If you are reading this, he wrote to her, tell her I was not unfaithful. Tell her I was afraid of opening a grave she had already learned to walk past. I sat with that sentence until the tea went cold. Anger came, then a quieter hurt: he had protected my peace and stolen my chance to choose. Cordelia did not ask for money. She asked whether I wanted her dead again. I said I needed a week.

I told the children only that their father had been keeping a kindness that was also a secret, and that their aunt was living. Some of them were furious for me. I was furious for myself and still grateful he had not left her on the street. I stopped the automatic transfers and sent a lesser amount by my own name, so the help would belong to the living. The office is empty now. The bottom drawer too. Grief is not smaller. It is more honest. A marriage can hold a closed folder and still have been real. Being unseen in a sister’s survival does not erase the years we shared. Freedom is learning the truth without letting it become the only story. Self-worth is sitting in his chair and deciding, at last, what I will carry and what I will set down.
