Lights and late notices became his problem. He called that cruelty. I called it the first honest math of the marriage. Then he asked for money to start a company and brought no plan, no numbers, no risk of his own. I refused. Not long after, I found a credit account opened in my name and a balance I had never approved. That was not a rough patch. That was a decision he made while I was at work earning the life he spent.

I left and slept at my sister’s. Divorce papers followed when I was ready, not when he was done being angry. The first months were tighter. Later a kind single father sat in on a tutoring session and stayed to talk after his child packed up. Nothing rushed. No one asked me to carry a household on hope. We built something slow on respect and ordinary care. When I look back at the marriage now, I do not dress it up as a lesson I was lucky to receive. I see the years I spent making it happen for two people while one of them watched. Leaving did not cost me a partner. It returned the hours, the credit, and the quiet I had been spending on a man who thought “make it happen” was an order for me alone. Choosing myself was not a luxury.
