Four Years Of Friday Mornings And Duct Tape Inside My Daughter’s Sneakers Before I Understood What I Was Funding

Six hundred and eighty dollars, every Friday at eight, for four years. The first time I set it up I cried, because I was finally the one who could give something back. By the end there was duct tape inside Wren’s shoes, rent going late, and Desmond coming off a second warehouse shift with his hands split open, asking me gently to pause it for a single month. I said they needed it.

My mother promised she would be at the party. Bells on. Saturday came pink and cheap and perfect, balloons and a crooked chocolate cake, and my seven year old kept turning to watch a door that stayed shut. When I called at four, my father answered over other people’s laughter and said they were at Russell’s place, that they could not drop everything for every little thing, and then that they did not count my family the same way because Russell’s was better established.

I cancelled the transfer, closed the co-signed car loan, cut the phone lines, and froze the card. Twenty minutes. Then I sent two sentences and the receipts to the whole family group.
