My father put my suitcase on the porch the week I told him I was pregnant. The baby’s father, he said, was worthless. That boy left town before the first doctor visit. I was eighteen, scared, and suddenly without a key. I rented a room, worked doubles, and learned how to be a mother with no one to call at two in the morning. I named my son Eli. I never asked my father for a dime. On Eli’s eighteenth birthday he sat across from me at our small table and said he wanted to meet Grandpa. I almost said no.
