The Woman Who Rinses Out Plastic Bags Because They Are Perfectly Good Suddenly Wanted Cash At The Door Every Time

For years she was insulted if we hired anybody else. What am I, a stranger, bring me my grandson. Then one Thursday I rang to ask whether Rowan could stay after school and she said sure, and then added, lightly, that I should bring forty five dollars. I laughed. She did not. It kept happening, cash only, whether he was there ninety minutes or three hours, and she would stand near the front door with her hand out like I owed admission to the house I grew up in. The night of the wedding I only had a hundred, and she went into her bedroom and came back with fifty five in exact change while my son slept on her couch under the same faded blue blanket I slept under at his age. I told my husband I was finished and we kept Rowan away for five weeks. When she finally asked if I was upset about the money and I said obviously, she asked me not to stop bringing him. I said then stop charging us. She said she could not.

The house had not been paid off for eleven years. She had refinanced it in 2014, when my husband and I nearly lost everything after his accident and I never once asked where forty thousand dollars had come from. The payment ran forty five dollars past what her pension and Social Security covered, every single month, and she had been walking it into the branch in cash so nothing would bounce and nothing would show on a statement I might ever see.
