My Dying Father Hid an Envelope After I Took Him In and Paid Every Bill 2

He had been ashamed to stay. He had been more ashamed to ask. The call was to the insurer. He did not want me to learn the policy existed while he was still eating food I bought. He thought I would believe he was paying rent on forgiveness.

I sat on the floor of the spare room with the papers in my lap. Anger did not disappear. A stack of late checks does not return a childhood. But the story I had been telling myself—that he came only to empty my house—was not the whole file. He came because he was dying. He hid the envelope because he still did not know how to be seen.

I did not announce what I had found. I put the papers back and kept paying what the days required. When he died six weeks later, the policy did what he said it would. I used part of it to clear the bills his illness had added to my table. The rest I left untouched for a long time. I did not call it a happy ending. I called it a finished page. He left once without a word. The second time he left a record, and I was the one who got to decide what it was worth.
