The Only Person In My Family Who Ever Saw Me Without A Comparison Attached Left Me A Letter For This

Adelaide had written it eighteen months before she died, in her own hand, and Ashby read it aloud because that was her instruction. She wrote that she was not confused, not manipulated, and not senile, and she named my father directly, because she knew he would use that word, and she wanted it answered in her voice from the far side of the grave. Then she explained why. For nine years my parents had been quietly borrowing against her, small amounts that were never repaid, all funneled toward Seraphina’s household, and Adelaide had a folder of it, every transfer, every unkept promise. She had watched them treat one granddaughter as an investment and the other as a resource, and she had left everything to me on purpose, as the last decision of a woman nobody could push around.

The second page was the one that changed my mother’s face. Adelaide had already deducted, from the estate, the full amount my parents had taken from her over those nine years, roughly ninety thousand dollars, and directed it be paid to the animal shelter rather than to me, so that no one could accuse me of taking it. She had done the arithmetic herself. She had known exactly who would be in that room.
