A kitchen island is already asked to do too much. It is a prep table, a homework desk, a buffet, and a place people lean while they talk. Designers sometimes add a small rounded shelf on one end, and it looks useless at first. It is too narrow for chopping, too light for barstools, and too shallow for pantry storage. That is the point. It is not extra counter. It is a separate landing spot so keys, a phone, a coffee mug, and sunglasses do not migrate onto the board where you cut food.
The shelf also changes how the island looks. A large rectangle of cabinets can feel like a box dropped in the middle of the room.
