The room went silent when my mother-in-law, Margaret, raised her glass at her 60th birthday party and smiled at me. “Here is my daughter-in-law… and her lottery ticket,” she announced, pointing at my eight-year-old son, Liam.
Everyone understood the insult: she was suggesting I had deliberately gotten pregnant to trap her younger son, Daniel, into marriage. My cheeks burned as Liam looked up innocently and asked, “Mommy, what’s a lottery ticket?” Before I could answer, Daniel pushed back his chair and stood.
He looked directly at his mother. “Yes,” he said calmly. “And you are the reason I almost lost my family.”
Daniel walked over and put his hand on Liam’s shoulder. “Eight years ago, when Anna told me she was pregnant, I was scared. I was young and didn’t know if I was ready to be a father. But she never pressured me to marry her. She told me she would raise the baby even if I chose to leave. I was the one who asked her to marry me.” Margaret scoffed and insisted Daniel had been too young to understand what he was doing.
