Who I Called, And The Reason A Grown Man Ran Across The Lawn Begging

I called his wife.

Her name is Loretta. She left him fourteen months ago and moved two towns over, and Desmond had told the entire street she was “visiting her sister” because he could not bear for anyone to know. I knew because Loretta had told me herself, over the fence, the week she packed her car, crying, while he was at work.

What Desmond did not know was that the driveway, the concrete, the workers, all of it, was happening on a property line that was in dispute, and the disputed strip was in Loretta’s name, not his. When they bought the two lots years ago, she held the deed to the corner parcel. His lawyer had been trying to get her to sign it over as part of the divorce for a year. She had refused.

So when I called Loretta and told her that her soon-to-be-ex-husband was pouring concrete across land she legally owned, in front of two paid witnesses, to trap an old woman’s car, she did not say much. She said, “Send me a photo of the truck and the workers.” I did. Then she called her divorce attorney, who called Desmond’s, who called Desmond.

That was the phone call that sent him running across my lawn. Not conscience. Not shame about me. The realization that he had just handed his wife’s lawyer a gift-wrapped act of malicious property damage and trespass, on video, one week before their settlement hearing.

The concrete came out that afternoon. He paid for the removal himself, and for my slashed tires too, because Loretta’s attorney folded it all into a single demand letter and Desmond signed rather than fight it.

Here is the part that surprised me. I did not feel triumphant. I felt sorry, a little, watching a man discover that the person he had spent a year erasing still held the ground under his feet.

He moved out in the spring. The house sold. Loretta came by once to collect the last of her things and we had coffee at my kitchen table, and she told me he had never once let her drive, in thirty-one years, not the truck, not anything. “Women can’t drive” was not about me. It was the only sentence he had left, aimed at the nearest woman behind a wheel, because the one he had aimed it at for three decades had finally driven away.

I still take my careful little Chevrolet out every morning. The driveway is clear. And every so often I think about Loretta, who got her own license at fifty-nine, the year after she left him.
