Grandmother Left Me Five Rusty Clocks While Everyone Else Inherited Her Millions

My grandmother passed away. In her will, she left all her money, millions of it, to my brother and his children. Everyone received something except me. I was heartbroken, but the lawyer said my grandmother loved me more than anyone, and handed me five rusty clocks. Everyone laughed. I started crying. Then I opened the envelope, and every jaw in the room dropped.

The letter was in her handwriting. She wrote that the clocks had been appraised the year before she died, and that the appraisal was attached. The five pieces were early American tall-case and mantel clocks, restored once and then left to age on purpose so no one would look twice. The lowest valuation was higher than the cash she had left my brother. The highest was more than the rest of the estate combined. She had insured them in my name two years earlier.

She wrote that I was the only one who sat with her while she wound them on Sunday afternoons, and that the others had asked, more than once, when the money would be available. She said she wanted the people who treated her like a bank to have the bank. She wanted me to have the things she had touched every day. The lawyer confirmed the appraisals were current and that the clocks were already listed in a trust that excluded the rest of the family.

The room went quiet. My brother asked if the letter could be challenged. The lawyer said the will was clear and the trust was already funded. I carried the clocks out in the same boxes they arrived in. The money went where she sent it. The clocks went home with me, and the letter is still inside the first one, where she told me to keep it.
