My Mother Told Me At Christmas Dinner The Best Gift I Could Give Was Disappearing 2

The envelope explained everything. I had bought the house eight years earlier, when Glenn’s gambling debts nearly cost them their old one, and the deed had always been in my name alone. I wrote that I was selling it, as my mother wished, so I could finally disappear. They would have until the end of February to move out. That was more notice than they had given me. Glenn read the letter out loud at breakfast, according to Hailey.

I didn’t leave them with nothing. I paid the first three months’ rent on a modest apartment near my mother’s work and sent the lease to Glenn. Beyond that, they were on their own. Glenn started attending a support group. Tanner sold his gaming setup and took a warehouse job in January. Hailey moved in with a friend and enrolled in community college again, paying for it herself this time.

My mother didn’t speak to me until March. When she finally called, she didn’t ask for money. She said the apartment was small and the bills were real, and that for the first time she understood what I had been carrying for eight years. She apologized. It wasn’t perfect, and it didn’t erase that night, but it was the first honest thing she had said to me in a long time. I told her I forgave her, slowly.

I sold the house in April and bought a small condo near my office, with one bedroom and no guest room. Last Christmas, Tanner invited me to dinner at his tiny apartment. He cooked spaghetti, burned the garlic bread, and paid for every bit of it himself. Mom came too, and so did Hailey. Glenn brought the pie. Before dessert, Tanner raised a glass and thanked me for being the reason he finally grew up.
