My Mother Brought Five Church Ladies And A Moving Truck To My Lake House Today 2

The deputy introduced himself as Deputy Harlan and said he was there to follow up on a report I had filed two days earlier. I told the porch what the envelope held. Four months ago, while applying for the mortgage on this house, my lender flagged a twenty-two thousand dollar personal loan and a credit card in my name that I had never opened. Both had been created while I was deployed, using the power of attorney I signed so my mother could handle emergencies. The bank statement showed every dollar had landed in the account of Brooke’s failed boutique.

Mom snapped that it was family money and that family helps family. I answered that I signed that paper so she could pay a utility bill, not forge my signature, and the bank had already confirmed the handwriting did not match. One by one, the church women stepped back. The woman holding the casserole set it on the porch rail and said quietly that she had believed Mom when she told them I bought this house for her. Mom had been telling the entire church that story for weeks.

Then I gave Mom the last page in the envelope. I would withdraw the report if she signed a repayment agreement for the full twenty-two thousand dollars over five years, and I had revoked the power of attorney that morning. Her hands shook, but she signed on the porch rail with the deputy as witness. The movers reloaded the truck and drove to Brooke’s condo, where Mom would stay. Brooke closed the boutique and took a job at a pharmacy.

The first payment arrived a month later with a short note saying sorry. The women from church came separately to apologize, and one brought a fresh casserole she let me keep. I hung the framed Bible verse in the mudroom, since it was a good verse, and the master bedroom stayed mine. Mom still comes to visit, but she always calls first.
