I Arrived At My Seaside House Hoping To Rest And Found A Cold Welcome Waiting 2

Mrs. Delgado explained everything in a rush. In February, Gregory had listed the house with a local agent, using a power of attorney that carried my signature. I had never signed it. A retired couple from Ohio had agreed to pay $640,000 and planned to take possession that very day. Vanessa had invited her family for the week so that nobody would question a stranger measuring the rooms, and she had changed the locks to keep me out until the closing.

I did not scream. I called Samuel Reyes, my late husband’s attorney and oldest friend, and he arrived within the hour with the original deed, which listed only my name. He phoned the title company, which confirmed that the notary on the power of attorney had let his license expire two years earlier. When the buyers pulled up at noon, Samuel calmly showed them the papers, and the husband, visibly shaken, cancelled the sale on the spot.

Gregory arrived at four o’clock, pale and unable to meet my eyes. He confessed that he owed $85,000 after a failed investment he had hidden from everyone, and Vanessa had convinced him that a quick sale would clear it. They planned to tell me the house was too much for a woman of seventy-three. The vacation week was only cover, and Vanessa admitted she had told her relatives to treat me as an unwelcome guest.

I did not press charges against my son, but Samuel filed a report about the forged document, and the notary was barred from practicing for good. Vanessa and her family were gone by dusk. I changed the locks myself with my own screwdriver and hung my embroidered apron back on its hook. Gregory sold his car to begin repaying what he owed, and he started counseling that same month. In April, he drove out on a Saturday morning and helped me replant the garden. I kept the house, placed the deed in a trust, and finally slept deeply that night.
