I Worked for My In-Laws for Free for Five Years Fixing Cars and Mowing Lawns Every Weekend — The Weekend I Finally Stopped Everything Quietly Fell Apart

I fixed my in-laws’ cars and mowed their lawn every weekend for five years without asking for a penny. One ordinary Saturday, after I finished changing the oil in Jim’s old pickup, he looked down from the porch and said, “If you left tomorrow, we’d just pay someone better to do this stuff. Probably get it done faster too.” My wife Claire laughed. Something inside me went quiet. I finished wiping my hands, packed my tools, and that night decided I would not return the following weekend. For the first time in five years my Saturday belonged to me.

Claire’s messages grew sharper as the grass at her parents’ house grew longer. Then she discovered I was having lunch with her boss, Mark. The meeting was about a possible consulting business using the same mechanical skills her family had taken for granted. Claire saw it as a threat to the free labor arrangement. She later emailed Mark warning that I was having a midlife crisis and asking him not to encourage me.
