A Month After the Funeral I Opened the Bottom Drawer

Douglas died of cancer after forty-one years of marriage, three children, and four grandchildren. We had been a pair since high school and nearly inseparable after college, and I believed I had already inventoried his life. A month after the funeral I made myself enter the home office and pack what he had kept: taxes, warranties, receipts, the ordinary paper of a careful man. In the bottom drawer of the desk I found a thick folder. Inside were rent receipts for a house several hours away, an address he had never spoken. His name was not on any lease. The money left his personal account every month. Older pages named the same woman. Cordelia. The earliest slip was twenty-four years old. I sat in his chair and felt the room tilt. Mistress was the first ugly word. It did not fit the man who had sat beside me through every ordinary Tuesday.

I barely slept. Happiness is not proof, but it had been our habit, and I could not go forward without a reason. In the morning I drove to the house on the newest receipt. An elderly woman opened the door, thin, gray hair in a loose bun. I knew the face before I knew the name. You died almost twenty-seven years ago, I said. She did not deny it. She let me in and set a kettle on as if we still had that kind of time.
