I Thought He Was Hiding A Secret Woman But What I Found Changed Everything Forever 2

Leonard set down the roller and told me everything. His late wife, Ruth, had used a wheelchair for her last six years, and he had carried her up the porch steps rather than finish the ramp he promised. After the funeral, he could not look at the unfinished boards. When I joked about my knees and my mother’s wheelchair, he decided to rebuild the house so I would never need carrying. The young woman was his daughter, Naomi, a carpenter helping him.

Naomi led me through the house. There were grab bars in the bathroom, a shower with no step, and a bedroom with a sunny window facing the maple tree. Leonard had worked on it every day until the light faded, then still arrived at my table on Sundays with barely enough energy to stay awake. The yellow paint on his knuckles had come from this kitchen. He had planned to ask me to move in at New Year’s, paying for everything from his own pension and the insurance money Ruth left him, never touching a dollar of mine.

Footsteps pounded up the ramp, and Trevor stormed in, out of breath. He had tracked my car through the banking app he managed for me, and he had come ready to rescue me from a con man. He stopped at the sight of the yellow walls. Leonard handed him a folder holding every receipt for the lumber, paint, and fixtures, all paid from his own account. Trevor read it slowly, and his face turned red. Then he looked at me and said, “Mama, I was wrong.”

I told Trevor that worry was no crime, but treating me like a child was, and he apologized to Leonard with a long handshake. In January, Leonard asked me to move in, and I said yes. Now the whole family eats Sunday dinner in the yellow kitchen, and Gordon’s old brown recliner sits by the window, carried in with great care.
