I Married A Dying Stranger To Grant Her Wish And Her Lawyer Told Me This

The envelope felt heavier than paper should. Inside, I found a brass key, a folded letter, and a stack of old photographs held together with a rubber band. The top photo showed a skinny boy of twelve in an oversized winter coat, holding a scholarship certificate and smiling at nobody. It was me. Beneath it were dozens more, every birthday and graduation, each taken from a distance, as if by someone who never dared come closer. My knees nearly gave out. The attorney said quietly, “Read the letter before you speak to anyone, because Dorothy’s cousin is already on his way.” I looked up. A black sedan was skidding through the cemetery gates, and a man in an expensive coat stepped out, shouting that the marriage was a fraud and that I was a thief.
Mr. Whitaker stepped between us and raised one hand. “Gerald, Dorothy expected you,” he said calmly. Gerald had not spoken to her in thirty years, yet he appeared three weeks ago, the moment he heard about the wedding. Mr. Whitaker turned to me. “Please read her letter aloud. She wanted you to hear it before anyone could twist the story.”My hands shook as I unfolded the page. “Thirty-one years ago, I was the night nurse who cared for a young mother named Anna in her last weeks. She made me promise to watch over her ten-year-old son. The state placed him in foster care, and because I was not family, they refused every request to see him. So I paid for his schooling through a scholarship that carried no name. When you walked into the hospice wearing a volunteer badge, I knew your eyes at once.”

The letter went on. “I never told you because I feared you would stay out of duty, and I wanted your kindness to be real. It was. The key opens my safe deposit box, which holds my house deed, my will, and four hundred thousand dollars I saved over forty years. Marriage makes you my legal husband, so no one can call you a stranger.” Mr. Whitaker added that the will was signed eight months earlier, with a video of Dorothy and her doctor proving her mind was sound.

Gerald’s face lost its color, and he left without another word. We found the box that afternoon, and everything was exactly as she wrote. I moved into her small house and found a scrapbook of my whole life, kept in her careful handwriting. With the money, I started a fund in her name that pays for the final wishes of hospice patients, from weddings to one last trip to the sea. Every Sunday, I bring fresh flowers to her grave, and I still wear the ring.
